What to Expect in a Session?

The first thing that comes to mind before starting any sort of exercise program is of course, what will you have to do to see results. No matter what you are trying to accomplish, good health requires sacrifice and dedication. I don’t know about everyone else, but dedication to my health is something I struggle with. I feel like I’m constantly fighting to find consistency in taking care of my body, but I never keep it up long enough to feel a difference. But, somehow my sessions with RyseUP Rehab were different.

After over eight months of 30-minute sessions, I think it boils down to one key thing; it is a matter of showing up and going for it. To quote Benjamin Mee in We Bought a Zoo.

“sometimes all you need is twenty seconds of insane courage. Just literally twenty seconds of just embarrassing bravery. And I promise you, something great will come of it.” 

Each Session is Typically Between 30 to 45 minutes. You will go through a series of intentional exercises. Each exercise is complete within 90-120 seconds, and then you move directly to the next exercise. Those 30 minutes will fly by, particularly if you are giving it your all. So, yes, each session does require sacrifice and dedication—but just for 30 minutes. The fitness instructor is there to keep you on track with the order of exercises, body placement, and is focused on encouraging you to push yourself and breathe appropriately. 

The purpose of Static Incline Training Exercises (SITx) is to push you to reach muscle failure. When I say that you probably think of those workouts that push you past your limits and you wake up the next day feeling like you must have pulled four different muscles, but that is not what we do here. The nature of SITx at RyseUP Rehab allows you to really push yourself without risking injury. SITx is based on a scientific phenomena we call inroading, which is designed to have you reach muscle failure without having to push yourself so far that it harms you. The sessions will be tailored to you, so that as you  work your whole body, we will still focus on the areas you need to rehabilitate or to strengthen. 

How to Prepare for a RyseUP Rehan Session 

Besides coming prepared to work hard, here are a few other things you should keep in mind:

These exercises require complete focus. You will learn to tune out all distractions while you are performing each exercise.

You will be breathing in a unique way. It may feel awkward, and I will be honest and say I laughed through my first session. The breathing is important, so make sure you focus on doing it the way you are instructed. Incorrect breathing can drastically change your results, and limit your ability to get the most out of each session. 

Avoid tensing any muscles other than those you are directly working. This means no grimacing, clenching your teeth, gripping when not applicable, holding your breath, tensing up your face or neck, applying effort and backing off, or leveraging yourself with your feet. If you do not minimize these actions, you will not get the results you want and you may end up compromising how your body responds to the demand placed on it. (These are called outroading behaviors.) 

Always come dressed appropriately. Wear shorts so it will be easy to align your joints during exercises and dress in breathable clothing that does not restrict circulation or cause you to overheat. Because each session is intense, you may start the session feeling chilly, but by the end you will be sweating. 

There are no weights, but you should still have a controlled release. Each exercise will have a positive and a negative as you apply force and release. You must be controlled in applying and releasing force or you risk injury as in any other exercise. The instructors will also help you to know when to release and to slowly let go. 

Never go past your pain barrier. Even if you feel like you can push harder, you should not push past a pain barrier. That pain is there to warn you of possible injury. The goal here is not to push so hard you injure yourself, the goal here is to reach muscle failure as intentionally and quickly as possible. 

A session with RyseUP Rehan will be like nothing you have ever tried before. Your experience will of course be unique to you, but I felt a difference in my own body after just two sessions. It’s 2021 and I’m receiving treatment for a car accident that happened in 2016. A difference after two sessions was a big deal for me.
